Alcove carries a variety of Maritime Blues’ 100% cotton tea towels and napkin sets with custom prints for our shop. Each piece is hand made and printed with west coast, nature inspired designs.
“My roots are deep in the New England soil where I can trace my family tree directly to the Mayflower. I grew up in Massachusetts, summers were spent swimming and sailing on Martha’s Vineyard Island off Cape Cod where I learned to love and appreciate the sea. I moved to Nova Scotia in 1981 and spent 28 years immersed in the strong Maritime culture there. In 2011 I began a new chapter of my life by following my two children out to the West Coast. I fell in love all over again with the mountains and this other sea. After moving from pillar to post – Vancouver to Salt Spring Island – in November of 2016 I finally settled down and bought a house in Ladysmith, BC on beautiful Vancouver Island. I am very excited about setting up my Studio and getting involved in my new community.”
Alcove now carries a variety of art cards and prints featuring paintings by Round Woman Studios.
“When I paint, I usually begin by creating a sky and then the land and then I wait and watch the scene until, almost like dreaming, images begin to form and characters appear from somewhere in my memory or imagination. I am probably more surprised and delighted than anyone when I see how the paintings develop. Other times, I begin with a character, usually women or children, and I paint until I have created a life around the character.
Growing up in Lachine Quebec, along the St. Lawrence river, I spent my childhood as the last of five children, in almost complete freedom and joy. I believe these carefree days allowed me to develop an imagination that has carried me through life. I had parents that allowed messes and experiments. I grew up on stories told by my grandmother of her childhood in the prairies and found myself overwhelmed by the beauty of these lands when I saw my first wheat field. My heart is tied forever to little houses, strong women and their daily tasks and the sheer vitality of children.”
Alcove now carries a variety of soaps by Cure Soaps “…a natural more gentle way to cleanse and hydrate our skin…”

Made with simple and REAL ingredients because what doesn’t go into our skin care products is just as important as what does!”

Enviro Glass Straw emerged from a concern for the environment and a desire to teach our children to tread gently on the Earth.
The Glass Straw Story
“Enviro Glass Straw is a family run business on Vancouver Island, B.C. Our concern for the future of our planet and the overuse of one time plastic straw led glass blower, Tyler Hayes to making glass straws for his children, Autumn and Morgan. Friends and family loved the plastic free glass straws that Tyler was manufacturing in his home studio and Enviro Glass Straw was born. Together, Tyler, Leah have created a small team that’s passionate about what we do.
We are proud that all of our straws are handmade on Vancouver Island, B.C. Our mission is to help reduce waste by providing a beautiful, toxic free and reusable product. We hope that our children will learn by example and love our Earth just as much as we do!”
Reusable food bags for produce, tea, bread and more!
The Gogo Bags Story
“It was summer of 2010. I was occupied with two things and two things only. How do I send litterless lunch to kindergarten with my first born and find a meaningful job for my mom. Then one July midnight it dawned on me. It was kind of two for one deal. I created the concept of gogoBags and with that my mom had a meaningful work with a purpose and my son had a safe reusable bag for his litterless lunches.
It all started like that, solving my personal problems. Then I kept solving other issues I saw a need for a fix in my life. I noticed how much produce we were wasting each week. There it was; another challenge to create a bag to keep vegetable fresh longer in the fridge and then the fresh bags were born.”

Alcove carries the incredibly reusable beeswax wraps by Abeego from Victoria, BC.
Here is how Abeego founder Toni Desrosiers describes her creation:
“In 2008 I invented Abeego, the original beeswax wrap on two founding principles. Firstly, it’s logical. It breathes. If living food needed to be wrapped in airtight wrap the rind, peel or skin would be airtight. It’s not. Secondly, it’s inspirational. It looks good, feels good, smells good and fosters a healthier relationship with food. The best part? We’ve inspired others to take part in the beeswax food wrap movement -and what an honour it’s been to pave the way! Welcome to the future of food wrap.”

Heartwood Studio Woodturning is the work of Ken Broadland who’s main goal in turning wood is to present the wood’s beauty in a useable form. His specialty is large salad bowls and servers, with a supporting cast of other creations such as cutting boards, kitchen implements, small bowls, coasters, cremation urns, artistic bowls, and whatever else catches his interest and is supported by his customers. Designs are simple and practical. His work sells well because it is attractive, functional and reasonably priced.
His favourite woods to work with are local Bigleaf Maple and Arbutus (Madrone) – maple because of its wide variety of exquisite grains, and arbutus because of its hardness and durability. The wood Ken uses is salvaged from around the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island. In the interest of conservation, he uses mostly trees that have been downed by the wind or felled for safety reasons. There is very little waste, as he uses the McNaughton System to produce small bowls from inside big ones, turns scraps of wood into small items such as butter knives, and burns any residual wood in his woodstove.

Denman Island Chocolate, located in British Columbia’s beautiful Gulf Islands, was created in 1998 by Daniel and Ruth Terry. Long interested in the organic food movement, the Terrys left the big city for Denman Island in 1994, looking for a more rural lifestyle in which to bring up their two sons and thinking of starting a market gardening business.
Finding that a great many of their fellow islanders were already self-sufficient in vegetables, they turned (as ever) to chocolate, a shared love that dated back to their search for the perfect fuel while bicycle touring in northern France.
